The SXSW Experiment

It looks like the honor of "First SXSW Post" will fall to me, by virtue of being horrendously bored during Saturday's keynote address (the 37signals/Coudal crew, of whom I have a longstanding and very well-founded dislike). Oh, for those of you who don't know, SXSW is a big tech conference in Austin that's playing host to a number of us at EchoDitto.

Last night when we were all drinking margaritas and adjusting to the 88-degree weather, Tim asked us what our goals were for SXSW. I have some very complicated goals involving rethinking the binaries we use to talk about folksonomies, tagging, and how we classify information. Those ideas, however, require my full attention if I'm to do right by them, so I'll start simple.

I'm looking for SXSW to be a "field test" of a few organizing technologies we talk about but don't always get to implement. There are five Dittos here, as well as two ex-Dittos and several members of the extended Ditto family. How can we all keep in touch during the next five days? We're experimenting with a few ways, and I'd like to use the opportunity to: (1) Track which ones are useful in practice and which ones are just theoretically cool and (2) Note what applications we wish were available. Here's my list of what we're using so far:

      • Textmob: Michael set us up with a textmob group, so we can find each other for breakfast, lunch, or (only after 11am) drinks.
      • Wayfaring map: We're scattered all over the place, so before we left I put up a map we can use to find each other, establish meeting places, etc.
      • Group calendar: Rich worked with the existing SXSW calendar features set up a way for us to all feed in our daytime/evening schedules.

Of course, there's also our Flickr group, which isn't really an organizing tool, but is a hilarious way to publicize your friends looking like fools.

I'll [try to remember to] check back in later and let you know how the experiment's going...
