Stopping SOPA

      By: Tony Guzmán  |  December 16, 2011

The title of this post says it all - the innocently-named proposed piece of legislation called the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) must be stopped. While aimed at stopping online piracy, instead it proposes a scary set of rules that will in effect create a censorship bureaucracy and threaten the entire future of the internet as we know it.

This isn’t hyperbole. Great innovators like Sergei Brin of Google, journalists, engineers, media reform advocates like our client Free Press, and countless others citizens, consumers, and small businesses from both sides of the aisle are all resolutely opposed to this unparalleled attack against free speech and technology.

      What can you do?

Go here to contact your legislators and tell them to stop this dangerous bill! The bill will get voted on very soon so act now!

To learn more about the bill, check out this great video: http://fightforthefuture.org/pipa/

Note: We just learned late today that the House Judiciary Committee has delayed their vote on SOPA pending a new review. This is a good step, but not yet a victory. It gives us the chance to tell more people about the dangers that SOPA poses to the free internet that we have always known, and to have everyone we know call their legislators to express their concerns. Share this post, and some of the many news articles floating around the web, with your friends and family, and let’s protect the internet!
