When you're doing online engagement, it's not always easy to know what's working or what you should be doing better. With limited time and resources, its not good enough to have a gut feeling about what you should doing, if you don't have numbers to back it up, you're effectively flying blindfolded.
Today, NTEN and M+R Strategic Services released their 2009 eNonprofit Benchmarks Study. I will give some quick highlights from the event, but you should check out the whole thing. It's got enough numbers, tables, and charts that it will either make your head spin or, if you're like me, find yourself in, as one of the presenters put it, "nerd nirvana".
A few points that stood out to me:
- Open rate and click-through rate for email fundraising were down in 2008 from 2007, but response rate stayed the same (0.12%).
- Despite the economic downturn, the total amount raised online in 2008 was up 26% from the previous year.
- This growth was driven by a huge increase (46%) in the number of online gifts, which made up for a drop in the average size of a gift. These numbers confirm that the trend of grassroots fundraising through small donations seen with the Obama and others campaigns, carried over to non-profits as well.
- List growth, overall, declined from 19 percent in 2007 to 17 percent in 2008, but there this varied widely by sector.
- One of the coolest charts in the report shows the percent change in click-through rate that organizations saw for their advocacy emails depending on the ask. The chart shows how much click-through drops off when higher-level asks are made compared to the baseline of an online petition. For example, click-through is 10% lower when the ask is to "tell a friend", 51% lower for a letter to the editor, 75% for submitting a story, and down a full 95% if the ask is to make a phone call. These numbers have important implications for planning a high-impact email advocacy campaign.
- In 2008, 7% of activists were responsible for 31% of the actions taken. These are the people that do everything you ask them, send them more and keep them engaged.
- On the other hand, 61% of activists in 2008 only completed a single action (accounting for 26% of actions overall). Figure out how to get them to repeat.
- If you re-send an email to non-action takers, response rate is half of what it was the first time. However, that is still means a significant chunk of additional responses.
