EchoDitto partnered with the Pearl Harbor Memorial Fund to create the Pearl Harbor Survivors Project, an interactive website that seeks to document and honor those who survived the events of December 7, 1941. The timing of the launch coincided with the 65th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, which happened on December 7, 2006.
In addition to enabling survivors and their loved ones to upload photos, contribute stories, and add audio to their profiles, we established a toll free phone number so that participants could phone in their stories. Individuals could call 1-866-PHSTORY and record a story, which then gets converted to an electronic audio file and is automatically posted to the growing scrapbook on the website. Even better, callers could conference in another person, such as a parent or relative, and record an audio interview.
We also helped the Fund develop and execute an integrated online advertising and grassroots outreach campaign to drive traffic to the site, collect survivor stories, and promote the Fund's philanthropic mission. The launch of the project premiered on CNN Headline News on Thursday, Sept. 7th, 2006. It was covered by both major U.S. wires, AP and Reuters, which resulted in pick-up across the country in a combined 85 publications, including The Washington Post, FOX News, ABC News, Forbes, Fortune, and Business Week. The project was also featured on Yahoo’s front page during the launch date, Sept. 8th. In the first week alone, we recorded visits from more than 13,000 unique visitors.
On Veteran's Day, we hosted two live webcasts with three Pearl Harbor Survivors who answered user-generated questions from individuals, historians and students from around the world. We also launched an "Ask Dan" blog, where users can ask National Park Service Historian Daniel Martinez questions about the events of December 7, 1941, and its effect on the history of the country and the world.
During the week of the 65th Anniversary Commemoration, we interviewed a number of Pearl Harbor survivors in person, and added their stories and images to the website. To date, we have collected 315 survivor profiles, which accounts for a large percentage of the remaining survivors.
